Software
This Web presents information about the software packages installed on the computers of the labs in the Faculty of Engineering. Some of the software tools available on the Unix (Solaris and Linux) hosts are also mentioned, but there are too many to fancy listing even most of them. Information is also provided about software made available from major vendors for download.
Software Installed at the Faculty of Engineering
Some software installed on the Faculty of Engineering computers is available to everybody, other software is restricted.
Software with Unrestricted Access
Most of the computers of the public, teaching and instrumentation labs of SEECS and Factulty of Engineering offer the same set of software packages:
Note that some of the software enumerated is hosted by Unix (Solaris or Linux) hosts.
For a more succinct browsing, the software packages are also listed by categories:
Information regarding the
C/C++ and
Pascal compilers.
There are specific notes regarding the
Faculty of Engineering PostgreSQL Academic Database.
There is also software provided to us by
CMC for academic research and education purposes only.
Software with Restricted Access (CMC)
Canadian Microelectronics Corporation (CMC) provides specialized software to its members. To gain access to this software, faculty members, graduate students, researchers and technical staff can
register as a CMC Microsystems client. Just forward a copy of the final account confirmation email received after registering (removing any passwords) to the
Faculty of Engineering Support Team. Once a CMC client, you will be able to use
CMC software for your projects. Many uOttawa projects were completed using CMC software:
Furthermore, CMC allows the use their tools in instruction and doesn't require that students register to CMC for course work. The courses currently covered are:
- ELG7187
- ELG6158
- ELG5195
- ELG4132
Registering with CMC will nonetheless permit you to access the tools for more than the duration of the course.
Software Available from Major Vendors
Like other departments and faculties, the Faculty of Engineering subscribes to programs or has reached agreements with major vendors such that students and faculty members may benefit of freely available software for academic and/or research.
MSDNAA
The Faculty of Engineering subscribes to the
Microsoft Software Development Network Academic Alliance.
DreamSpark
Microsoft
DreamSpark is about giving students Microsoft professional tools at no charge.
VMware
The Faculty of Engineering subscribes to the
VMware Academic Program.
Symantec
The University of Ottawa has a corporative license for
Symantec Anti-Virus software.
Software Available on the Web
Lots of software available on the Web is of great use. Here are a few that we recommend.
SSH / SFTP
SSH Secure Shell is made available for download by CCS.
Mount ISO files
Software fetched from the Web used to be packaged as executable files (e.g. .EXE or .MSI). Software packages have become too large and many of them now come presented as .ISO files that can be burned to CD/DVD, and then used for installation (such as many packages from ELMS/MSDNAA).
If you're not so inclined (or equipped) to burn a CD/DVD just for installing a piece of software, be ware that it is possible to use such tools as PhantomCD instead. Those will
mount .ISO files and make Windows believe that a CD/DVD has been inserted. Afterward, it becomes possible to use Windows to browse that CD/DVD and execute whichever installation program resides on it.
Mount Linux filesystems
The tool
Ext2 Installable File System for Windows could be useful to get at those Linux files.
